Red Bull Skooled Tour - Poor Vida Wrap Up

Written by Colin Roy Tuesday, 06 March 2012 19:16

Poor Vida & Rec Shop hit the road with the Red Bull Skooled Tour, and damn! Texas got skooled. The tour took the shining stars from cities all over Texas, including A.Dd+, DJ Sober, Worldwide, Kydd Jones, and The NiceGuys, and teamed them up with some of the biggest acts from the Lone Star, like Bun B, Paul Wall, Manny Fresh, Chingo Bling, Michael 5000 Watts, plus a few other industry insiders. Throw them all on a bus, shake it up with a little Red Bull (and maybe some vodka), and you have the recipe for a killer underground tour, with a few lessons from those that know included. The Skooled tour included performances in Houston, Ft. Worth, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Corpus Christie, as well as visits to premiere hip hop spots in each city. Check out the video, shot and edited by Dallas' best director, Teddy Cool, and see what we got ourselves into...

2011 Artists - ArtLoveMagic

Written by ArtLoveMagic Thursday, 12 January 2012 13:16

2011 Artists - ArtLoveMagicAs a year ends, it’s good to reflect on the creative work you’ve done. We sent out an invitation to a few dozen artists to share a piece of visual art they created it 2011 and tell us a bit about it. Specifically we asked them to choose a piece they were proud of.

A variety of artists answered the call, from many different mediums. There’s been no effort here to order them into any categories. What follows is a mash up of Dallas area artists from illustrators, to painters, photographers, and even sculptors.  Also included are a few former Dallas-ites who’ve now moved around the world and still have a connection to artlovemagic.

You can click on each image to see it a bit larger, or follow the link after to see more of the artist’s work. Enjoy.

Check out a few below, then hop on over to the ArtLoveMagic website to view the whole collection. Pretty impressive, Dallas.

“Medusa”

mixed mediums on cotton paper, October 2011
18.5 x 12.75 inches

Medusa was once a beautiful, lovely woman. She was so beautiful and desired, a god took her innocence by force, raped her, and left her all alone. When Medusa came to Athena for help, Athena took the side of the god who raped her, since he was a god as well, and Medusa was simply a human that was as beautiful, if not more, than Athena. She then cursed her to be alone, deformed and never to know love. Athena turned such beauty into such horror, and left her at the end of the world. Later on she was be-headed by Perseus. I just wanted her to be remembered, not as a monster, but a beautiful woman who never had a chance. She symbolizes to me in many ways, what women have been dealing with since the beginning. This is a tribute to Medusa, the most beautiful woman that ever walked the planet.

I created this piece entirely in Adobe Illustrator. I treated it sort of as an optical illusion meshing his cloths with the background, bringing out the man himself. I used blending and meshing techniques that I have never used before, and I feel it is pretty unique to a lot of art that is out there. It was an open door to more styles of art.

I have had more mixed emotions this year than any other.  On September 17th, my son was born.   I have never experienced so much pain and joy all at the same time.  It’s really confusing in a way.  Like every other mom with a camera, he has become my biggest muse. This is my favorite image of 2011.  Most newborn photographers do the sleeping baby shots.  But, for Gabriel, I like to see his eyes open.  He has been called an old soul a few times with his incredibly deep eyes.  This image is important because, I have had to do a lot of trusting in God this year.  Gabriel was actually on an incline and I had to be really quick to make this happen.  I was so nervous that the basket would tip over and than I would really label myself a bad mother.  However, when I got the shot back, it was clear that the angels were holding him in place.  I’m pretty sure that you can see it in the photograph, if you really look.

RIP - The Immortal Minus Won

The following email was sent to me via Teddy Cool, Dallas based director. His words, though simple and to the point hit home for me, so I felt they needed to be shared. Please check out the video above, as well as the montage below, which was filmed the next morning while the Dallas art scene created a memorial wall for the Immortal Minus Won. There will be a second memorial on Monday 10-17 at Zubar on Lower Greenville.

Last night at 3:30am east coast time a text message woke me up passing on the news that Dallas graffiti writer, mural painter, postman, and friend Minus Won passed away shortly before midnight of that night. You may have never met Minus but I can almost guarantee that you have seen his work around Dallas. Minus was an original member of Dallas's first graffiti crew and one of the coolest, most down to earth people you would ever meet. When some friends and I started working on a Dallas street art and hip-hop culture documentary Minus Won was our first interview, Minus was stoked to be a part of the project and would regularly contact me asking if I needed anything and making sure I knew when he was available during the week in case we needed to shoot some more. I remember him tell me how cool it was that we were documenting the local graff scene because a lot of street art is temporary but what we were doing by filming it was gonna last forever.

5 minutes after I received the message I was in front of my laptop looking at the man himself and hearing his voice and opinion on art, growth, and the history of his art form in his hometown. If you have a few minutes, please follow this link and help keep the memory alive of one of Dallas's top notch street artists from the Infinite Crew.

So a few months back, we told you about the video experiment we were shooting with Blue Pill Entertainment, and some local musicians. Blue Pill is headed by Teddy Cool, a local director who is tearing up the Dallas music scene this year. The musicians we enlisted were local rapper Playdough, and local drummers Valenti and Captain Ron Davison.
